Modelling the Change: Using a novel mouse model of menopause to understand cardiovascular disease in postmenopausal women.

Webinar Description
For much of their lives women enjoy a relative cardiovascular advantage relative to men in terms of lower rates of cardiovascular disease. However, women are twice as likely as men to die from a heart attack, and after menopause mortality from cardiovascular disease increases to exceed rates of similarly aged men. Research into the mechanisms by which menopause increases the risk of heart attack mortality in women has been hindered by the lack of an animal model that accurately mimics the physiological changes of menopause. This presentation will introduce a novel model of menopause in which ovarian failure occurs gradually and mimics the hormonal changes of menopause on a temporally appropriate schedule. Some fundamental changes that may lay the foundation for increased cardiovascular disease mortality risk will be presented based on recent work from our lab.

  1. The webinar will be recorded and available on the CALAS website to all registrants following the session.
  2. Registrants will be eligible to receive a vendor-supported gift card, this month donated by Avidity Science, drawn at the end of the session.
  3. If you would like to attend but at this time, it is cost-prohibitive, please email the webinar chair (Charly McKenna, mckennch@uoguelph.ca) as exceptions may be provided.

Presenter: Glen Pyle, Professor of Molecular Cardiology, BC Women’s Hospital

Glen Pyle is a Professor of Molecular Cardiology and a Member of the Women’s Health Research Institute at BC Women’s Hospital, as well as the IMPART Network at Dalhousie Medicine. Dr. Pyle earned his PhD in Physiology and Biophysics from the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center followed by an American Heart Association Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The Pyle lab is interested in the sex differences associated with heart attacks, including how menopause shapes the risk of post-heart attack mortality in women; the mechanisms by which intimate partner abuse increases cardiovascular disease risk; and the development of novel therapies for heart attacks that are sex-specific. The team is currently supported with funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
