Reporting to the Director, Research Operations, the Service Coordinator, Facility Supervisor is accountable for front-line, day-to-day leadership of two Lawson managed research animal care facilities applying a comprehensive depth of technical knowledge and moderate management knowledge.  In support of city-wide governance of animal care, this role also reports to Western’s Director, Animal Care and Veterinary Services. The role is responsible for the allocation of day-to-day staff assignments, monitoring and adjusting for shifts in workload requirements.  The Service Coordinator is accountable to ensure service delivery is maintained and processes are implemented with quality and accuracy.  The role ensures staff compliance with learning requirements, participates in identifying further learning opportunities for staff and fosters effective working relationships. 

The Service Coordinator works as a liaison with the Animal Care Committee (ACC) and Animal Care Veterinary Services (ACVS) leadership team, to collaboratively fulfill Animal Use Protocol, Canadian Council of Animal Care (CCAC), Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), Animals for Research Act, Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Science (CALAS) requirements. This role focuses upon providing day-to-day operational leadership of the Lawson managed Victoria Research Lab and London Regional Cancer Program Lab animal research facilities. This role ensures that facilities operations are aligned with regulatory and hospital requirements. Areas of responsibility involve optimizing facilities areas, equipment, and labour to provide optimal animal housing, procedural space and husbandry services to Lawson’s animal-based research community while ensuring superior customer services and adhering to all budgetary requirements.

Qualifications

·       Successful completion of a College Diploma in Veterinary Technology or RLAT certificate in Laboratory Animal Science from Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Science

·       Minimum three (3) years’ experience in an animal facilities supervisor role preferred

·       Minimum five (5) years hands-on technical experience working directly with multi-species laboratory animals

·       Minimum two (2) years’ experience supervising technical staff preferred

·       Minimum one (1) year experience managing rodent breeding colonies

·       Minimum 1-3 years’ experience supervising staff preferred

·       Applied technical knowledge of animal research

·       Fluent and computer literate with computer systems such as email and Microsoft Office applications (MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
