Certification Exams

The CALAS/ACSAL Certifications Committee, through the examination process, enables technicians working in a variety of laboratory animal settings opportunity to become registered with a national standard at one or more of the following levels of registration:


ARLAT: Associate Registered Laboratory Animal Technician

This level is for those working in a laboratory animal setting who do not have an animal science related education but would like to develop this knowledge.

RLAT: Registered Laboratory Animal Technician

This level is for those who hold a diploma from a CALAS/ACSAL approved program in the study of Animal Health/Veterinary Technology or a university degree in an animal science /life science related field of study.

Provisional/RLAT Exam

The provisional exam is for candidates that are students in their last year of college, have graduated from college or have completed a related university degree. They take the written exam only and once they have enough hours in the field, they can apply to take the oral exam and achieve their RLAT.

RMLAT: Registered Master Laboratory Animal Technician

This level is for those who have a minimum 5 years laboratory animal experience post RLAT certification. The RMLAT is aimed at the supervisory and management level.

Associate Registered Laboratory Animal Technician

The Associate Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (ARLAT) is comprised of three modules. Candidates can choose to write one module per year or can accelerate through the program in one year if they have the necessary pre-requisites. Only complete application packages, including the documents specified below and payment, received by the posted deadline, will be considered for review.

ARLAT 1

Pre-requisites: High school diploma and currently working in the laboratory animal field.

Documentation Required:

  • High School Diploma
  • Résumé
  • Relevant certifications, degrees and schools you have attended

Fees: $269.32

Written Exam

  • Take Home
  • 80 Multiple Choice questions
  • Passing Mark: 80%
  • Due Date: April 1, 2020

ARLAT 2

Pre-requisites: Successful completion of ARLAT 1 exam.

Documentation Required:

  • High School Diploma
  • Résumé
  • Relevant certifications, degrees and schools you have attended

Fees: $269.32

Written Exam

  • Proctored
  • 80 Multiple Choice questions
  • The total time allotted is TWO (2) hours.
  • Passing Mark: 60%
  • Due Date: April 1, 2020

  • The total time allotted is TWO (2) hours.
  • Passing Mark: 65%
  • Due Date: April 1, 2020

Oral/Practical *

  • Proctored
  • Passing Mark: 60%
  • Due Date: June 2020

Note : Candidate must have successfully completed the written exam in order to proceed to the Oral/Practical. If the candidate passes the written but not the oral/practical, they are required to complete the written exam again within a year.

About The Exam

RLAT PROVISIONAL

The provisional exam is for candidates that are students in their last year of college, have graduated from college or have completed a related university degree and have yet to acquire enough hours in the field.

Documentation Required:

  • Name of program of study and date of graduation
  • Proof of enrollment in final year of program (Acceptance letter, current transcripts, letter from faculty, etc.)
  • All relevant certifications, degrees and schools you have attended.

Fees: $261.05

Written Exam

  • Proctored
  • 100 multiple choice questions
  • Passing mark is 75%
  • Due Date: April 1, 2020

RLAT

The Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (RLAT) is comprised of a written and an oral/practical examination.

Documentation Required:

  • Diploma in Animal Health Technology or Veterinary Technician or degree in related field
  • Résumé
  • All relevant certifications, degrees and schools you have attended

  Fees: $389.55

  Written Exam

  • Proctored
  • 100 multiple choice questions
  • Passing mark is 75%
  • Due Date: April 1, 2020

  Oral/Practical *

  • Proctored
  • Passing mark is 65%
  • Due Date: June 2020

Note : Candidate must have successfully completed the written exam in order to proceed to the Oral/Practical

RLAT (Oral/Practical Only)

Candidate must have successfully completed the provisional written exam and achieved the correct number of hours (1500).

Fees: $306.82

 Oral/Practical*

  • Proctored
  • Passing mark is 65%
  • Due Date: June 2020

Note: If the candidate passes the written but not the oral/practical, they are required to complete the written again within a year.

CERTIFICATION

RMLAT

Fees: $448.85

1. Written

  • 10 long answer questions
  • Passing mark is 60%
  • Due Date: Feb 5, 2020

2. Technical/Scientific Paper

  • Only candidates that successfully completed the written exam will be able to submit a paper.
  • Due Date: April 25, 2020

 3.  Oral/Practical

  • Passing mark is 60%
  • Due Date: at Symposium
