Salary (Hourly): $29.19 – $39.02

Salary (Annual): $53,125.80 – $71,016.40

  • A Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) or Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Biological or Life Sciences is required.



  • With a B.Sc., a minimum of 7 years’ experience as an Animal Technician or equivalent is required.
  • With a M.Sc., a minimum of 5 years’ experience as an Animal Technician or equivalent is required.
  • Direct experience working with animals (rodents/research models, agricultural animals, fish, and exotic species) is required.
  • Must have prior experience managing an animal colony.
  • Previous experience with the management of wild species of animals (birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians in captivity) is required.
  • Experience in biological research preferred.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.



  • Demonstrate understanding of the scientific method and care and use of animals in research required.
  • Basic computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, and email are required.
  • Management courses and experience are highly desirable.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with academic staff, technical support staff personnel, students and the general public, is required.
  • Must be able to maintain a wide variety of standard laboratory and wild animals.
  • Handyman skills would be an asset.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.



  • Good health appropriate to working in an environment with live animals and normal physical abilities required.
  • No allergies to animals or cleaning solutions required.


  • Management of the Animal Holding Facility in Biological Sciences including coordination and operation, allotment of space, equipment, supplies, and staff time; planning operations with users; arranging for maintenance of area and equipment; orientation and supervision of outside workmen and tradesmen.
  • Development and maintenance of various record systems: budgetary bookkeeping; development and implementation of disease control; development and implementation of safety procedures; development and implementation of emergency procedures; ordering of supplies, animals and equipment; insuring proper physical functions for animal care are monitored and controlled by computer network; maintain a database of animal numbers and user protocols with the assistance of the Senior Technician.
  • Supervise Animal Holding Staff and Research Support Technicians/Students/Trainees, who provide husbandry.
  • Direct work with animals including inspections, examinations, euthanasia and some regular maintenance.
  • Interact with various organizations such as Physical Plant for the maintenance of the facility and various committee responsibilities related to animal care and welfare.
  • Perform public relations in providing information to public schools and the public at large.
  • Other related duties as assigned or required.
