Research Animal Husbandry Technician

The Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization-International Vaccine Centre (VIDO-InterVac; vido.org), a research institute at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Canada, is seeking a Research Animal Husbandry Technician within our clinical research group. The candidate will work with a variety of animal species including farm animals, poultry and small laboratory animals (rodents, rabbits, ferrets) in Biosafety Containment Levels 2 and 3. The clinical research group works closely with VIDO-InterVac Scientists to help understand infectious diseases of humans and animals and to develop effective strategies for improving human and animal health.
VIDO-InterVac is a preeminent research institute with its primary focus on infectious disease research and vaccine development against both human and animal pathogens. VIDO-InterVac currently has over 150 personnel and state-of-the art facilities including the International Vaccine Centre (InterVac), one of the most advanced containment level 3 facilities in the world.
The successful candidate must have excellent communication and organizational skills, and meticulous attention to detail, and will be expected to work in a team-based research environment. The candidate must be willing to undertake additional job-specific training.

DUTIES:
• Perform blood and tissue sampling in a wide variety of species
• Give injections to and perform technical procedures on a wide variety of animal species, according to experimental design
• Observe and report clinical signs in a variety of animal species
• Perform humane euthanasia where necessary
• Communicate effectively with a variety of colleagues in a timely manner
• Schedule animal trials and keep accurate, detailed records
• Safely perform duties in CL3 facilities (animal handling, feeding, cleaning and other procedures wearing appropriate personal protective equipment)
• Clean, feed and humanely handle farm and laboratory animals according to guidelines set by the Canadian Council on Animal Care
• Set-up, maintain and repair indoor and outdoor pens, feeders, waterers
• Pressure wash and disinfect animal rooms and equipment
• Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Preference will be given to a Veterinary or Animal Health Technologist or applicants with a Diploma or Degree in Animal Science. Applicants with equivalent experience with farm and/or laboratory animals may be considered.
• Must have animal handling and husbandry experience
• Must have a valid Saskatchewan Driver’s license
• Must have basic computer skills
• Must be able to perform heavy manual labour
• Must be able to work in a team environment
• Must be able to understand the importance of, and follow, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
• Must be able to work weekends (rotating schedule)
• Knowledge of anesthesia and aseptic surgical technique is desirable
• Previous research experience would be considered an asset
