Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Vice-President (Research and International), on regulatory matters and to the Dean of Science for operations, the incumbent manages the operation of the campus-wide animal care and use program to support research and teaching. The incumbent directs the activities of Animal Care staff, and ensures compliance with local, provincial and federal regulations to ensure the continued accreditation status of animal care facilities. The position is responsible for the oversight of diagnostic, surgical and clinical veterinary technician services and is involved in training of students. The incumbent manages the experimental surgery facility, rodent facility and aquatic facility and contributes to the oversight of field stations where animal research takes place. The position coordinates veterinary support services for principal investigators (including those working on campus or at field sites with wildlife), and manages the health observations and treatments of research animals. The Incumbent plans and directs the strategic growth of the facility.


The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:

• Extensive knowledge of and experience with regulatory matters pertaining to ethics of animal care and use in research, teaching and testing (e.g. Animals for Research Act, CCAC, and Tri-council);

• Possession of, or willingness to work towards, Laboratory Animal Science certification;

• Experience in fostering effective communication within and among groups;

• Strategic orientation with attention to detail;

• Outstanding interpersonal and organizational skills;

• Ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously;

• Proven capacity with technology in an independent, highly confidential, ever-changing work environment;

• Exceptional listening, verbal and written communication skills; and

• Must be available for afterhours emergencies related to animals or the animal facility.

Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of a doctorate in veterinary medicine with a license to practice veterinary medicine in the Ontario as a member in good standing of the College of Veterinarians of Ontario. This along with 1-2 years of clinical experience, 2 years professional management experience, and 3 years of laboratory animal medicine and science experience (or equivalent).
