Transgenic Technologist

The Centre for Phenogenomics has an immediate opening for a temporary full-time Transgenic Technologist.  Reporting to the Associate Director, Transgenic Core, the incumbent will provide services for the production of genetically-engineered mouse models. The incumbent will assist with breeding, colony management and technical assistance to support the operations of the Core. The work is conducted in a highly regulated environment according to Standard Operating Procedures.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Preparation of mouse embryo donors and recipients for transgenic services, including:
    • Selection of estrus stage in female mice
    • Checking plugs for timed pregnancies
    • Intraperitoneal injection of hormones for superovulation of embryo donors
  • Mouse identification and tissue biopsies
  • Maintenance of mouse colonies, including breeding and weaning
  • Data entry into data bases and record keeping
  • Caesarian section and cross-fostering
  • Vasectomy
  • Preparation of media and reagents
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • Veterinary Technician Diploma, education in Animal Science or Biology program or related experience in a research setting is an asset.
  • Certified as a Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (CALAS) or working towards certification completion within the first year of employment is an asset
  • Prior experience with mammalian embryo manipulation and cell culture is not required but is advantageous
  • Must a motivated, responsible person, able to work in a team environment
  • Must have excellent communication (both written and verbal), interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Must have a willingness to learn new techniques
  • Demonstrated excellent work ethic; professional attitude, high standards for accuracy, attention to detail and trouble-shooting capability
  • Ability to meet deadlines, adapt to changes in schedules and priorities and to solve technical problems
  • Must have close attention to detail to accurately follow and document procedures and meticulously enter data
  • Ability to work independently and be a self-starter operating with minimal supervision
